This lecture is named in memory of Loris Williams, 1949–2005. Loris was a passionate advocate for the right of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to use archives as a means of re connecting with their family, country and Indigenous identity. In 2006 the Australian Society of Archivists held the inaugural Loris Williams Memorial lecture to commemorate her life and work.  Dr Jackie Huggins has been a close associate of the late Loris Williams and her family for decades and is proud to present the 2012 Annual Loris Williams Lecture entitled Reclaiming Identity, Place and Story: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Records.
 
Dr Huggins is an historian and author who has had a distinguished career in government, non-government and community circles. She is a former Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia and Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation member.  In 2001 Dr Huggins became a Member of the Order of Australia for her work in reconciliation, social justice, and women's issues, and her contributions to literature.
