This site visit will provide visitors to Brisbane with an introduction to the state-of-the-art archival facility operated by the Queensland State Archives at Runcorn on Brisbane's south side. Located approximately 20 kilometres from the city centre, the Runcorn facility is the single archival facility operated by the Queensland Government to archive and provide access to the state's public records and house the Government Recordkeeping and Digital Archiving activities.
You will begin your tour in the Lecture Theatre with a short overview of the roles and responsibilities of Queensland State Archives, along with the history of the organisation and the building. From here you will be taken for a tour of the main areas of the facility including the Archival Sorting Room where transfers are received and the adjacent Arrangement & Description Unit and the Public Search Room where researchers are provided with access to public records. Two of the major repositories housing some of the 47 kilometres of records will also be visited. As Queensland State Archives opened an extension to the original building in 2008, you will visit the new repositories which doubled the existing storage space, giving Queensland State Archives added capacity to store records from over 600 public authorities. While in the expanded facility, the energy and cost-saving features of the expanded facility will also be explained.
Your tour will conclude back in the Lecture Theatre with time for questions and discussion.
